Kuranda Scenic Railway

Kuranda Scenic Railway

If you want a fun scenic form of transport from Cairns to Kuranda village then the Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of the best options. It is a must- do if you are in Cairns or if you are visiting far north Queensland.

Experience the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway as it travels through the ancient rainforest and on to Kuranda.  Kuranda is a quiet, pretty town set amongst spectacular rainforest, there are fabulous views from the railway of the vast stunning landscape.

This ride was captivating it will take you in comfort through the rugged landscape. On my trip I learnt about the history of the train and the area while taking in the breathtaking scenery.  This journey on one of the world's most scenic train routes will take you through hand-hewn tunnels and across bridges with amazing views highlights of mine including viewing the Barron River and Stoney Creek Falls.

You can do a one way trip to Kuranda or a return trip back to Cairns. I travelled to Kuranda on the scenic railway and returned to Cairns by the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. It was fun returning by the Skyrail as you can see the whole ocean when you return. I would recommend experiencing both transport methods.

The best day to visit Kuranda is when the markets are on which is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday. There are a number of walks through the markets which are worth following. If you are animal lover like me there are plenty of places around Kuranda where you can see wildlife such as at the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, the Aviary, Birdworld, and Australian Venom Zoo.

One highlight of my time in Kuranda was the Kuranda Candy Kitchen, which takes you through the tradition of old fashioned candy making. If you have a bit of sweet tooth a visit to the candy shop is a must.
