If you want a true winter experience you need to visit Mount Buller. It is a great day trip from Melbourne or spend a week or two there to really make the most of the stunning ski resort.
Mount Buller is the most available alpine resort in Australia. Its beautiful landscape includes 180 hectares of ski trails, the longest being 2.5 kilometres, with an average snowfall of 1.5 metres.
The ski resort has a network of 25 lifts which are capable of moving more than 40,000 people per hour. The ski season opens in early June and closes in late September. There are around 80 kilometres of groomed trails spread over more than 300 hectares of terrain. 25% is beginner terrain, 45% intermediate and 30% advanced.
Mount Buller is easily accessible from Melbourne as it only 3 hours away. The best way to get there is by a transfer; personally I really enjoyed the transfer as I had the opportunity to talk to other people also heading to the slopes. On a transfer they also stop at Mansfield for the chance to pick up any snow gear which is perfect for beginners like me.
I tried out snowboarding for the first time and loved it! My instructor was really helpful and friendly and there was plenty of room to practice in. I only went up for a day trip but I wish I could have stayed longer!
