Have a Hoppin’ Holiday on Kangaroo Island

Have a Hoppin’ Holiday on Kangaroo Island

Kangaroos at Sunset

Kangaroo Island is located just off the coast of South Australia. It is the third largest island in Australia; its area covers 4,405 square km and includes several different terrains and a National Park. There is so much variety in things to do on this island. There are six main attractions or things to check out while on the island that you should incorporate into your holiday. A complete Kangaroo Island means exploring the Remarkable Rocks, investigating the wildlife there in addition to kangaroos, taking a dip in Vivonne Bay, adventuring in Flinders Chase National Park, witnessing Seal Bay, and marveling at the Cape Willoughby Lighthouse.

Remarkable Rocks

Remarkable Rocks

Mother Nature has created these geological masterpieces over the last 500 million years. The popular photography spot is located in Flinders Chase National Park. If you spend a day or two in the park or on the island, go back to see the Remarkable Rocks several times at different times of the day. Then you will witness Mother Nature’s second gift she bestowed on this place. The rocks look remarkably different depending on the varying light from the different times of the day.

Investigating the Wildlife on Kangaroo Island

Echidna

Of course, you can see lots of kangaroos on Kangaroo Island, but they are not the only animal that you will find there. On land, look for koalas, wallabies, echidnas and possums. Like most places in Australia, there are many different birds that migrate through or make their home on the island. Pelicans can be seen along the coastal areas. Marine life aplenty inhabits the coastlines as well, you can see penguins, seals, sea lions and much more marine life can be seen under the sea if you go snorkelling or SCUBA diving off of Kangaroo Island.

Take a Dip in Vivonne Bay

Vivonne Bay

Vivonne Bay is on the southern coast of the island and is home to the boat jetty and safe swimming beaches. You can hire a fishing charter here or go fishing from the jetty. Take some amazing pictures of the Southern Ocean as its waves crash into the cliff face right where the Harriet River empties out into the ocean. Vivonne Bay also has barbecue and picnic areas, toileting facilities, and you can camp there as well.

Find Adventure in Flinders Chase National Park

Admiral'sArch

Flinders Chase National Park protects the vast area of wilderness in the far southwest corner of Kangaroo Island. It is a pretty large size National Park at 328 square km. Cape du Couedic is where you will find some of the park’s most dramatic features including Remarkable Rocks, which we already highlighted above, the Admiral’s Arch and a colony of New Zealand fur-seals. Also be sure to check out the coastal landscapes, the Gosse Lands, and the Cape Borda Light Station. Camping facilities are available as well as other lodging and accommodations within the park.

Witness the Beauty of Seal Bay

Seal Bay Conservation Park

You can take a guided tour of Seal Bay and see the sea-lions in their natural environment. Take a way down the boardwalk through the limestone cliffs and spend some time at each of the viewing platforms so that you can relax and take in all the scenery of this beautifully preserved coastal region.

Marvel at the Classic Beauty of Cape Willoughby Lighthouse

Cape Willoughby Lighthouse

The Cape Willoughby Lighthouse should definitely be on your list of places to discover while on Kangaroo Island. It is pretty isolated; it is on the Dudley Peninsula which is on the far east part of the island. You can actually make reservations to stay the night in the lighthouse keeper’s cottage. It is home to the first and largest winery on the island and also has lobster, lavender, and dairy farms. You can also buy honey from the honey makers there.

The best and most economical way to travel is with a Budget car rental. Just make sure you take a crash course in driving on the left side of the road.
