Saving Tips

Saving for a holiday can be difficult and the hardest part is getting started. Once you are in a routine and have a goal it is a lot easier to save. The best place to start is to work out which tours and places you would like to visit so that you can set your goal. Paying deposits for tours is a great idea especially if you are booking in advance. Then you can make installment payments or just pay of the trip by the due date.

Another great way to save is by booking budget accommodation. You don't need to compromise on comfort when staying at backpackers and hostels. At the end of a busy day of sightseeing all we need is comfortable and clean accommodation. Backpackers are a great way to meet like-minded travellers and new friends. There are some really fantastic backpackers in all of the major cities and many offer freebies, such as tea, coffee, linen, towels and breakfast.

When I was saving for my trip I saved a lot by cutting back on things that we sometimes take for granted, for example bring your own lunch to work/uni instead of spending $10 every day, hire a DVD instead of going to the movies.

Other useful saving tips include:

  • Try to avoid ATM fees by withdrawing cash from your bank's teller or taking cash out when making a purchase instead of paying $2 or more when getting cash out of an ATM.
  • Turn off power outlets when not in use. You can save a lot of money on your electricity bill by switching off power outlets, electricity is still in use when your household appliances are on standby.
  • Buy generic brands, this is a good way to cut back and save extra dollars. A lot of generic products are the same quality as brand products.
  • Leave your credit card at home when you are out shopping. Credit cards are useful for emergencies but they can be dangerous, it is easy to justify buying that pair of shoes when you are in the store.

Staying on track with your goal is a great incentive to save more. With a few simple changes to your everyday lifestyle you will be closer to your next holiday.

If you have any saving tips you would like to share I would love to hear from you!
