Is it worth buying travel insurance?

It’s a question that’s asked more commonly that you’d think … is it worth buying travel insurance?

In times gone by it wasn’t spoken about by booking agents, they were scared of talking about the additional cost in fear of losing the overall sale. In short, it was considered a negative – yet another cost.

This isn’t the case anymore. Largely due to horror stories and people losing out financially on what were meant to be ‘once in a lifetime trips’, people now value travel insurance highly. Regardless if it’s your belongings and possessions, luggage, bookings or health, insurance – if it’s the right kind – we'll have you covered.

Don’t let one single decision ruin your trip – buy travel insurance today.

Nine situations where travel insurance shines

1. Fight cancellation
Anyone who’s travelled has been there. An unexpected announcement, the drama, and then a sudden rush to the attendant’s desk. You can’t predict when a flight will be cancelled but you can take measures to make sure your costs are all covered.

2. Lost luggage
When you consider that in excess of 20 million pieces of luggage are lost every year, it’s quite obvious it cannot be entirely avoided. This is why travel insurance is vital in protecting your luggage and the possessions inside.

3. Medical emergency
Have you ever thought about what would happen if you lost your medication, needed a script filled urgently or needed medical treatment in an emergency, and what about the cost? All part of travel insurance.

4. Stolen personal items (including passport and wallet)
If your personal items are stolen you are going to need emergency cash and replacement passports … urgently. This involves more than a form to fill out, you’ll need insurance.

5. Evacuation due to injury
You’ve been injured in a remote location and medical aid is not readily available. Insurance will help you with your required evacuation.

6. Evacuation due to natural disaster
As is the case with number 5, it is worth buying travel insurance.

7. Sudden illness prior to departure
With travel insurance your sudden illness won’t be any more painful than it has to be. Yes, your trip will be cancelled but your costs will be covered.

8. Transport provider declares bankruptcy
What are you going to do if the linking airline, cruise provider or train company you are using goes bankrupt? Travel insurance will not only cover the costs lost, but help get you to your location.

9. Terrorism
Sadly, a real threat to all overseas trips, insurance has never been more valuable.

As is the case with most types of insurance, travel insurance for most people means they’ll be better off safe than sorry.

I work in travel insurance myself, and went to the UK and Europe in 2005 and 2011 and the US in 2006. I never had travel insurance, even working in the industry. I felt like I was invincible!

So when I was in Miami I got really sick with the flu. To get doctor visit, X-Ray and needle in the butt it ended up costing me over $1,200. When I realised I could have gotten travel insurance for $92 I suddenly felt regret for never getting it.

Now in 2014, still working in travel insurance, I truly believe in getting *at least* basic travel insurance that covers the medical (but cover for cancellation fees and luggage is a bonus too).
