Father's Day, falls on the first Sunday of each September in Australia. In many other countries it falls on the third Sunday in June. However, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea share the first Sunday of September as the day to celebrate fatherhood and male parenting.
Originating from the Unites States early in the 1900's Sonora Smart Dodd is largely credited with the creation of Father's Day with the first celebration being in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Prior to this Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908 organized a celebration for Fathers to celebrate the lives of 210 fathers who died in the Monongah Mining disaster in, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907.
Today Father's Day is recognised as an important day to celebrate, acknowledge and treat Fathers, Step Fathers, Grandfathers, Great Grandfathers and Father figures. Whilst not a Public Holiday in Australia, Father's Day is recognised as an important part of the calendar with cards, family time, dining out and gifts being a regular part of Father's Day celebrations.
Show Dad how much you care by getting him something different this year, or even better, something you can do together.
