From Allanford to Melbourne is a route that has everything you could possibly ask for as a motorcyclist. From breathtaking scenic views of the deep, blue waters, to twisty forest paths, bathed in shadow, The Great Ocean Road is the ultimate ride out. No wonder it was voted as Australia’s no.1 driving destination by Last Minute.au. Covering 243 kilometers in total, if you set out early enough, you can cover the route in a day. Even better though, spend a few days on your journey, sampling some of the great Australian food and hospitality along the way.
Stunning coastal scenery
The dramatic scenery of the south-west coast is one of the main attractions of The Great Ocean Road. In particular, the stretch between Apollo Bay and Lorne is beautiful - you’ll be wanting to make regular stops to take in the sights. At Lorne, check out the 12 Apostles. These craggy, limestone rock formations, that appear to rise out of the Southern Ocean, are truly remarkable. Make a stop along the way too at Anglesey Beach and Bells Beach to check out the waves and surfing, even if you’re not going for a paddle yourself - there is horizon for miles.
Nature at its finest
One of the most diverse sections of The Great Ocean Road is the ride through the Great Otway National Park. Generally the tarmac is pretty dry, however be careful on this section of the road - watch out for damp patches, particularly in the shade. Through the park you will want to pull over to witness the glory of the majestic waterfalls, tumbling through into the gorges. You can also do a treetop walk, up high in the mossy and ancient native trees. Just make sure that you stick to the speed limit when you’re riding through the park on your motorbike - they are strictly monitored to protect the wildlife.
Essential pit stops for lunch
There is no shortage of outstanding local produce to sample along The Great Ocean Road. Of course there is plenty of freshly caught seafood and fish, such as the delicious shucked oysters from Lorne Fisheries. Pull up at the Pennyroyal Raspberry Farm and stock up on fresh fruit. Sample some delicious gourmet cheese from Cooriemungle. Then at the end of your ride, stop at Basalt Vineyard for some homegrown wine - it is like sunshine in a glass.
The Great Ocean Road is perfect for an extended road trip on your motorcycle. You will see the best that Australia has to offer, from the turquoise seas, to verdant forests full of wildlife. It will certainly be a trip to remember.
