Beaches, Boating & Beauty: Experiencing Hamilton Island

It’s one of Australia’s many coastal gems, but even so, Hamilton Island exists in a league all on its own.  This utopian, self-contained island stands apart from the rest of the Whitsundays for a few notable reasons, with sparkling sands and crystal clear waters being just the tip of the iceberg.

Read on if you’re looking to make the most of your next trip to Hamilton Island!

Set Sail

As most of the island is proudly car-free, the real way to get around on Hamilton is by boat! You can rent anything from a modest dinghy to a speedy catamaran, but if you’re looking to be a Pacific pioneer, it’s worth looking at some of the used sailing yachts for sale online. As the waters around Hamilton tend to be quite predictable depending on where you’ve docked, this island can be a fantastic location for anybody who’s looking to seriously get into yachting.

It’s also worth mentioning that there are some beaches and sections of the reef that can only be accessed by hiring a catamaran, so having your own vessel can make exploring Hamilton a whole lot easier.

Explore The Reef

With the expanse of sand flats that makes the coastlines of Hamilton so distinguishable, there’s actually a myriad of opportunities for visitors to get up close and personal with a lot of the island’s most popular animal attractions. The major attraction has to undoubtedly be the blossoming sections of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef that can be observed both by snorkelling or even simply by walking along Hamilton’s signature sand flats at low tide. Get ready to witness colonies of sea turtles and swim amongst the coral reefs, watching the comings and goings of schools of vibrant tropical fish. Snap some shots of some happy butterfly fish during the day and if you’re lucky, during the winter you may even be able to see some humpbacks and their calves on the horizon!

Get On The Green

Of all the things to do on Hamilton Island, it’s safe to say that a visit to the island’s signature Golf Club is an experience that’s truly built for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you’re an amateur, a hobbyist or a bona fide professional, Hamilton Island’s world-renowned par 71, 18-hole championship golf course will not disappoint! Not only is the Dent Island course a unique challenge for even the most seasoned golfers, but the views from the green are breathtaking to boot. Each and every hole highlights another angle of the glorious Coral Sea, so be sure to bring along your camera!

And for the kids, the club also boasts a sophisticated mini golf course that can easily fill up a day in your itinerary with minimal fuss.

Lazy Beach Days

There’s no better way to conclude any coastal getaway than letting yourself have a lazy day or two lounging on a pristine beach. Of course, when it comes to Hamilton Island, you’re really spoiled for choice, as the Whitsundays beaches are known to be some of Australia’s best! You could let yourself just enjoy the luxuries of your beachside resort, or take a trip to some of the island’s most popular beaches. The Catseye Beach is a crowd favourite, with its sparkling, turquoise waters and expansive coastline.

If you have your own vessel, it’s also worth checking out Whitehaven beach, which is largely considered to be one of the best beaches not just in Australia, but in the world. It’s gorgeous, secluded, and guaranteed to let you experience total peace and relaxation.
