Australia’s Top Spots for Spotting Kangaroos

In Australia, there are twice as many kangaroos as there are people, and travellers from all over the world make their way here to catch a glimpse of these unique animals. If you want to ensure that you and your children get the opportunity to see one in the flesh, then check out these hotspots for kangaroo watching.

The Great Ocean Road

At 243 kilometres in length, the Great Ocean Road has become one of the world’s most popular road trips. Visitors to the Australian continent come here for great views along the coast, including the Twelve Apostles rock formation. However, it is also home to many wild kangaroos. During your long drive, you will inevitably encounter a good number of these wonderful animals.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

If you don’t want to risk not catching a glimpse of a wild kangaroo, then there are plenty of wildlife sanctuaries where you can spend time with them. One of the most famous is the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Located in Tasmania, Bonorong takes in injured or orphaned wildlife and ensures that they live safely and happily. Beyond kangaroos, you will have the opportunity to encounter Tasmanian devils, koalas and wombats.

Kangaroo Island

As if the name didn’t give it away, Kangaroo Island has one of the highest kangaroo populations of anywhere in Australia. This is because over a third of the land is protected, acting as a conservation area for Australia’s unique wildlife. There are a number of fun activities taking place each year on the island, attracting thousands of tourists. However, its main attraction are the animals. For any wildlife enthusiast, a stop off at Kangaroo Island should be an essential part of your holiday itinerary.

Spotting kangaroos in Australia is hardly a difficult task. However, you do have to know where to go. You can’t just wander around the Sydney Opera House and expect one to turn up. Seek out the areas of the country with the highest populations of kangaroos. A trip down the length of the Great Ocean Road is a good place to start, with many other sites making the trip worth it. If you get a chance, visiting a wildlife sanctuary or conservation area offers your best chance of seeing these incredible creatures in their native land.
