5 Best Weekend Road Trips From Sydney

5 Best Weekend Road Trips From Sydney

We often think that weekends are too short to take a road trip, but to be frank, the opposite is true. While weekends may not offer enough time to drive across the country, they do offer you enough time to shoot down the coast with the family on Friday and come back on Sunday. But where would you go? What’s close enough to justify taking a road trip over a weekend?

In this article, we’ve put together some of the best destinations for you to take a road trip to from Sydney.

Hire a Campervan

There are many ways you can take a road trip. You could take your own car, jump on a bus with a bunch of mates, or hire a campervan. Our personal favourite option is to hire a campervan for a road trip. The driving part of the road trip can be tedious and uncomfortable, often being the worst part of the whole trip.

However, with a campervan, travelling becomes an experience all by itself. Take the family along for the ride and stop off along the way. Make the trip enjoyable and memorable with a campervan. Check out some cheap campervan rentals in Sydney here for your trip.

Best weekend road trip destinations from Sydney

Some of our fondest memories come from road trips with the family. But before you hit the road, you need to know where you’re going. Here are some of the best weekend trip destinations that you can take with your friends or family:

1.   North Coast

For a tropical escape, taking a trip to the North Coast is a great option. Visit the surrounding towns, like Forster or Pacific Palms. Pacific Palms is a little gem that many people overlook. This little town literally has more beaches than it does shops. It’ll take you about 3 hours or just over to get there, making it a suitable destination for a weekend getaway.

Travel details:

To get to Forster, it’s about 306 km from Sydney. On average, this trip will take you 3 hours and 15 minutes to do. That excludes any traffic stops or congestion that you may encounter as you leave Sydney. For the best experience, we suggest arriving on Friday and leaving on Sunday afternoon.

2.   Port Stephens

Port Stephens is a bit of an all-rounder town. It’s about a 2-hour and 30-minute drive from Sydney and is great to visit all year round. Around Port Stephens are a bunch of small towns, all hosting their unique features and activities. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to hike, chill on the beach, or grab a scrumptious breakie, there are tons of options.

Travelling details:

Port Stephens is 185 km from Sydney, taking roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes by car, depending on road conditions and traffic. To get there, you’ll just take the Motorway.

3.   Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

Sometimes we just need a change of scenery without having to drive for hours to get to our destination. The Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park offers you the solution. With a short 45 minute drive, you can dive into some of Australia's beautiful landscape, with rainforests, aboriginal historical sites and some fabulous beaches.

Travelling details:

The Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is roughly 37 km from Sydney, which will take about 30 minutes to travel. Take note that getting to the park can be confusing sometimes. The main routes you’ll take are the M2 or M1. Or, you can drive to the West Head Road car park, leave your car there and catch the ferry from Palm Beach Wharf.

4.   Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains offer some of the best scenic views Australia has to offer. Being about 2 hours away from Sydney, the Blue Mountains are the best place for families to experience nature together. With the Three Sisters and a range of hikes to go on, including hikes for kids or the three-day hike to the Jenolan Caves, you’ll have a wonderful time.

Have you ever wondered why they’re called the Blue Mountains? When you look at the mountains from a distance, the abundance of eucalyptus and gum trees creates a blue haze that covers that landscape.

Travelling details:

The Blue Mountains National Park is about 60 km from its base in Sydney. From there, you’ll need to travel another 2 hours to arrive at your destination.

5.   Snowy Mountains

Hmm, have you ever wondered why they’re called the Snowy Mountains? As the name suggests, the snowy mountains are a great winter destination for those who love skiing or snowboarding. That said, it also offers stunning views during summer, so you can actually take a trip here any time of the year and still enjoy yourself.

After a jam-packed day of snowboarding, you could venture down to the Thredbo Village to warm up with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and maybe some baked goods from the local Bakery. Make sure you have your national park pass, though, because you’ll be going into the Kosciuszko National Park to get to Thredbo.

Travelling details:

The Snowy Mountains are the furthest destination on our list, being 491 km away from Sydney and a 5 hour drive to get there. That said, when you see the mountains and the beautiful landscape the journey will feel so worth it.

Final Thoughts

These are only a few of the amazing destinations that you can visit for a weekend trip from Sydney. There’s still Kangaroo Valley, Berry, Pebbly Beach, and Jervis Bay on the South Coast, so try them. Take a weekend with the family and explore some of Australia’s gems in a Campervan. You only live once, right?
