A Baby Dolphin for Sea World!

A Baby Dolphin for Sea World!

Sea World is celebrating the arrival of the newest member of the Sea World family – a beautiful female baby dolphin, weighing 15 kilograms and measuring 95cm in length.

The calf’s proud parents are mum Sunnie and dad Kiama, who are both first time parents at ten years of age.

The yet to be named calf is doing very well, and has been observed swimming strongly and suckling milk from its mother.

Sea World Marine Mammal Trainer Erin King said that it was wonderful to have a new dolphin calf at Sea World and all the trainers are very excited by the birth.

“The calf was due on Australia day but was actually born a week earlier than we were expecting, on Monday 21 January, so it was a wonderful surprise.

“We were also very glad that the calf came before the wild weather so Sunnie had time to settle into a routine before the heavy rain and winds set in, especially as the calf is a cheeky little thing.

“We have noticed that the calf is very energetic, strong and quite independent for her age, often racing off around the pool without her mum which is quite rare for such a young calf,” she said.

Sea World will run a naming competition in conjunction with Corporate Partner Eveready Dolphin, commencing on Friday 8 February and finishing on Friday 8 March 2013.

Those wishing to help name the baby just need to visit the Dolphin Australia Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/dolphinaustralia) and suggest a name, with the winner receiving a Sea World family holiday and an opportunity to meet the baby.

The best way to see Sea World’s newest dolphin is with a VIP Pass which offers unlimited entry to Sea World, Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet’n’Wild Water World until 30 June 2013.
