1. Admire the Incredible Pinnacles
An almost three-hour drive along the coast from Perth will bring you to the Nambung National Park, which is where visitors can spot the Pinnacles. More than 250,000 travellers a year stop at the Pinnacles in order to see the amazing limestone formations rise out of the desert in such a breathtaking fashion. The rock formations were actually formed due to erosion over thousands of years, but the native Aboriginal people in the region have their own cultural explanation for their appearance. The traditional view is that the Pinnacles were formed when ghosts had nowhere to go and were fossilised. 2. Have a Blast at the Lancelin Sand Dunes
Almost directly in the middle of Perth and the Nambung National Park is Lancelin, a small town that offers a number of exciting outdoor recreation opportunities. 3. Visit a New Country at the Principality of Hutt River
Keep driving north after Lancelin and Nambung and you will see signs after about four hours that point to the Principality of Hutt River. 4. See Dolphins at Shark Bay
Shark Bay is located four hours north of the Principality of the Hutt River, and it is home to the charming towns of Monkey Mia and Debham. Visiting Shark Bay will give you an incredible opportunity to feed dolphins at the Monkey Mia Resort, collect shells at Shell Beach and see the blowholes at Point Quobba.
5. Be Amazed at Exmouth
It's a full 10-hour drive from Shark Bay to Exmouth, but your reward will be a chance to dive in the stunning Ningaloo Reef. The marine life in the area is amazing, and you can see humpback whales, whale sharks, dolphins and countless fish underwater.

Myself and the family did a similar trip on the recent school holidays! Our goal was to drive up in minimal time (to make it for Christmas eve) and take our time heading back down to Perth and doing all the sight seeing. Fantastic trip but a very long drive on the way up. We were particularly impressed with the Karratha Motel where we stayed from 1 afternoon to the following morning. Affordable and perfect for me and the wife and the little ones! Good to know about these places if like us your family is on a budget over the silly season.
