Hayman Island: Crown Jewel of the Great Barrier Reef

Hayman Island: Crown Jewel of the Great Barrier Reef

For years, Hayman Island reigned as Australia’s most iconic resort however it needed a serious makeover for some time. Thankfully, One & Only stepped in and directed an $80 million renovation. Now named One & Only Hayman Island, the resort sparkles again as the centerpiece jewel of the Great Barrier Reef crown.

Hayman Island lies off the coast of central Queensland, and comprises part of the Whitsunday Islands archipelago. For those of you that can’t arrange a private jet charter to fly you into the nearby airport at Hamilton Island, you’ll need to either fly into Sydney or Brisbane. From there, take a flight to Hamilton Island, and finish your journey with a boat ride over to Hayman Island. Whew, worn out already and you’re not even there! Don’t worry the lap of luxury and relaxation awaits you.

Once you get to the resort, and find yourself lounging at the infinity pool in your own private cabana, your jet lag will fade quickly. You might be so inclined to take a selfie alongside the pool that appears to be floating atop the brilliant Coral Sea. Later, take a leisurely stroll in the fine, white sand, listening to the whisper of palm trees, as you feel a nap coming on. Whatever suits your needs, Hayman Island will have it.

The resort feels extremely private, as it’s the only resort on the island. The property also caters to both active families and couples, effectively split in half to accommodate all guests. Couples will enjoy the spa, facials, massages, gym with in-house fitness team and “Ocean Dreaming” treatment- a massage on a bed placed directly in the sea. Meanwhile families have unlimited amounts of fun with the plethora of watersports. Whether it’s a quick boat jaunt, scuba diving off famous Whitehaven Beach, snorkeling or fishing, Hayman Island provides all the outdoor pleasure you could ever want. Inside the resort isn’t too bad either.

The breakfast buffet features lovely, fresh produce from papayas, to mangos, to dragon fruit. You might also find yourself gorging on king crab, tiger prawns and throwing back delicious rock oysters. The ultra-swanky rooms and accommodations will have you feeling like royalty in no time. The only thing that upstages the resort is the view of it from above. Take the whale spotting chopper for a view of the island from the air, and indulge in spectacular, National Geographic quality, scenic vistas. Your experience at Hayman may have you feeling like you’re floating in space. In reality, you’re just Down Under on a pristine slice of heaven.
